Boy Skiing Down a HillWinter is a magical time of year. The cooler weather provides an ideal backdrop for loads of entertaining pursuits. Here are our picks for the top four places to enjoy some cool activities in Tennessee this season.

1. Look Rock Tower Trail

Tennessee’s mild winter weather is the perfect time to embark on a family adventure. Enjoy breathtaking scenery on a frosty hike along Look Rock hiking trail in Blount County. Just 45 minutes from Lenoir City, this trail is less than a mile long, and lower elevations and easy terrain make it a perfect outing for all ages.

This paved track is a quiet, hidden gem a bit off the beaten path. It offers an inviting stone overlook featuring stunning mountain views that are a perfect setting for a photo op. The trailhead is well marked, and the path is kept in great condition.

2. Cataloochee Ski Area

Located about two hours from Lenoir City in Maggie Hill, North Carolina, Cataloochee Ski Area is the jewel of the Great Smoky Mountains. Folks come from all over the south to test out their skills on its slopes layered with manmade snow. Go skiing, snowboarding, and tubing all at this winter wonderland. There’s even a terrain park for the experienced skier with plenty of features to master your best tricks.

If you’re new to skiing, don’t worry. This ski area offers lessons and onsite equipment rentals, too, including waterproof bibs and jackets. Adult lift passes start at $28, and kids ride for $23 and up.

3. Knoxville’s Christmas Light Displays

Who doesn’t love a holiday light show? Knoxville is about 30 minutes from Lenoir City and offers some of the area’s best displays of Christmas lights. Grab the kids and pile in the car for some good old fashioned holiday fun. A driving tour of these glittering beacons of festive cheer is an inexpensive way to celebrate the winter season.

Large displays like Christmas in Chilhowee Park and “Lights Up” at The Pinnacle at Turkey Creek run through December 30, 2020. Don’t miss Knoxville’s merry downtown display entitled “Peppermint Trail,” where local businesses present their most magnificent holiday decor through January 6, 2021. Check out the many homes throughout the Sterchi Hills neighborhood that also do a spectacular job of presenting stunningly bright light shows.

4. Tour the Titanic Museum

Pigeon Forge is another Tennessee town that’s an ideal place to visit during the colder months of the year. This popular tourist destination is a little over an hour from Lenoir City. Winter is the perfect time to tour the Titanic Museum, as you’ll avoid the summer crowds.

Have you heard the tragic story of this famous passenger liner that sank in 1912? Pigeon Forge’s exhibit provides guests with a world-class, interactive experience. Climb a replica of the Grand Staircase and browse more than 400 artifacts recovered from the original ocean liner.
